Entered as a private first class and served as orderly and driver for the regimental commander. He sailed for Guadalcanal and was transferred to the regiment's 1st Battalion and participated as a rifleman and then a squad leader. He returned to the U. S. and was promoted to platoon sergeant. He was selected for the Non-Commissioned Officer Screening Course to determine whether he was suitable for officer training. In April 1945, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Reserves.
