Activity During WWII

As a Major General, he commanded troops in the Pacific and European Theaters of Operation. He led the attack on Kiska in 1943 and commanded the 7th Infantry Division in the taking of Kwajalein in 1944. After D-Day he led the XIX Corps in pursuit of the retreating German Army through France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. Received the Silver Star, Army Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, American Defense Service Medal with Base Clasp, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three service stars, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two service stars, Officer of the Legion of Honor (France), French Croix de guerre 1939-1945 with Palm. Commander of the Order of Leopold (Belgium), Belgian Croix de guerre 1940-1945 with Palm, and Grand Officer of the Order of Oran\ge-Nassau (the Netherlands).
