Served with the Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 104th Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, the 'Yankee' Division as a U.S. Army medic. He was captured in Rodalbe, France, on November 12, 1944, while tending to a wounded sergeant and lieutenant in a foxhole, by a German infantryman with the 11th Panzer Division and was held prisoner of war for six months in Stalag III-A, Stalag III-F, and Stalag XII-A until he was liberated by Russian forces on April 28, 1945. Received the Good Conduct Medal, Silver Star, Bronze Star, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.
