At the beginning of WWII, he helped evacuate U.S. citizens from France. Became intelligence officer to the staff of Commander Amphibious Force, South Pacific and served in this capacity during the Guadalcanal campaign. Served as executive officer of 1st Marine Regiment and served in this capacity during the New Britain campaign. Received the Bronze Star with Combat 'V' for his service. He then served as commanding officer of the 5th Marine Regiment and led his unit during the Battle of Peleliu and received the Legion of Merit with Combat 'V'.
