He was a WWII ACE, credited with shooting down eight enemy aircraft in aerial combat, and assisting in the destruction of a ninth. His first five victories were earned as a pilot with American Volunteer Group 'Flying Tigers'. Received the American and British Distinguished Flying Cross while serving in Marine Fighting Squadron Three Hundred Twenty-One (VMF-321) in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
