Served as Assistant Division Commander, 3rd Infantry Division and accompanied his division to North Africa during Operation Torch and in the combats in Morocco and Tunis and later landed in Sicily and liberated Palermo and Messina. His division participated in the Landing at Anzio and the liberation of Rome. He then commanded the 45th Division during the invasion of Southern France and liberated Epinal and Rambervillers. He was seriously wounded when his jeep struck a land mine.
