Activity During WWII

He was commander of 79th Infantry Division of the XV Corps and oversaw the division's landings at Normandy and attacks at the Battle of Cherbourg, where it spearheaded the attack on Fort Deroulede, and fought in several other battles. The division participated in Operation Flashpoint in 1945. He then commanded the VIII Corps until December 1945. Received the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, and Army Distinguished Service Medal.
