Activity During WWII

As a Lieutenant General, he served as commander of XI Corps and he led the corps in combat on New Guinea and Morotai. The corps then fought at Leyte and on Luzon in the Philippine Campaign and he was the principal commander during the Battle of Bataan to liberate the Philippine Islands from Japanese forces. In September 1945, the corps landed at Yokohama for the initial occupation of Japan.
