Served as a demolition engineer. First served with the First Army, 237th Combat Engineers, later attached to the Fourth Infantry 23rd Airborne in St. Lo, France, and later in the 101st First Airborne. The Combat Engineers were attached to the unit that needed them. He landed at Normandy on H-Hour. He helped blow up the sea wall at Normandy Beach.
