At age 19 he began training as a B-17 pilot. He was stationed at Nuthampstead Air Force Base, England in the U.S. 8th Air Force, 398th Bomb Group, successfully completing 35 missions over Germany. He was awarded the Air Medal with Silver and Bronze Cluster, and European Theater of Operations with two Bronze Stars, the WWII Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal with Bronze Star and French Jubilee of Liberty Medal.
