As Major General, he served as commanding general of the 3rd Armored Division in Northwestern Europe from 1942 to 1944. In 1945, he commanded the 79th Infantry Division. Following the war, he served as commander of the International Military Tribunal Command in Germany, where he worked to enhance security and ensure that none of the German's on trial for war crimes were able to escape.
