He was the first Jewish chaplain ever appointed by the U.S. Marine Corps and served the invading forces at Iwo Jima. He served in the 5th Marine Division and provided much needed care for the wounded and also worked to establish cemeteries. After the battle, the rabbi gave his “The Purest Democracy” speech at a Jewish memorial service during the dedication of the cemetery. He was awarded three service ribbons for his role during the fighting.
