He was shipped overseas on July 20, 1944, as a member of the 4th Battalion of the 1st Marine Parachute Regiment. The parachute regiment was seen as impractical for the Pacific Theater of Operations and he was transferred to Company D, Second Battalion, 26th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division. On February 19, 1945, he went ashore at Iwo Jima and fought against Japanese forces until March 25, 1945. On March 13th he courageously destroyed two cave positions with demolitions. He received the Silver Star for his bravery.
