Upon graduation from Texas A&M, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and ordered to duty in the 3rd Armored Division. Shortly after he transferred to the Army Air Corps. Early in his career, he flew DC-2 transport planes to Panama. After Pearl Harbor, he was assigned to flight testing and promoted to captain.
