Lieutenant General, Served as Commanding General of the 85th Division and then was given command of the XV Corps. The drive across Germany began in July 1944 and crossed the Rhine River and into Salzburg, Austria. King Leopold of Belgium and his wife were liberated by the XV's Corp after being taken hostage by the Germans. On May 5, 1945, at Haars, Germany he was present at the unconditional surrender of the German forces. At the end of the war, he served on the Secretary of War's Personnel Board. Received four Distinguished Service Medal.
