He was killed On July 25th 1944, when the U.S. freighter Robin Goodfellow was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-862 while en route from Cape Town, South Africa, to New York, carrying a cargo of 8,602 tons of chrome ore. All hands, including the 27 Armed Guard sailors and the 41-man merchant complement perished.
