He was a broadcast journalist during the war and an original member of a team of reporters and war correspondents known as the Murrow Boys (Edward R. Murrow). In 1944 he took a job with ABC News covering the war. He accompanied the first American troops to land at Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day.
