Activity During WWII

Lieutenant General. He was rated a command pilot, combat observer, technical observer, and air observer. On January 26, 1942, he became Chief of Staff, Army Air Forces. Having 30 years combat and command experience as a ground and air officer, in July 1942, he was appointed Commanding General of U.S. Army Air Forces in the South Pacific Area. In 1944, he became Commanding General U.S. Army Air Forces Pacific Ocean Areas. On February 25, 1945, he was headed for meetings in Washington, D.C. and was on board a C-87A Liberator Express that departed Guam for Washington, D.C. via Kwajalein Island. After taking off from Kwajalein it disappeared and was never found and there were no survivors. He was declared dead on February 25, 1946, one year after he disappeared.
