Graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical College. In 1943 he graduated from the Command and General Staff College, and was assigned as deputy purchasing agent in the European Theater of Operations. He later became deputy post commander of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Received the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster; the Bronze Star Medal; the Army Commendation Ribbon with Oak Leaf Cluster; Croix de Guerre with Palm; and Officer, Order of the Oaken Wreath, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
