He was a foreign correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune. While stationed in Berlin he reported on the German invasion of France, Poland, and the Low Countries. He was expelled from Germany for reporting that Germany would next attack the Soviet Union. On November 17, 1940, on his way to cover Mussolini's invasion of Greece, he was killed when his plane crashed in Yugoslavia. He was the first war correspondent killed during WWII.
