Enlisted on December 8, 1941 and served from 1941 to 1944 in 93rd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force in England, North Africa, and United States. Flew missions over Italy and bombing raids over Ploesti, Romania's oil fields. His plane lost two engines, and he survived a crash landing that killed several of his crew. He became a prisoner of war in Romania for 14 months.
