He was 15 when he joined in 1944. Served with the engineer crew on a T/2 (Type 2 turbine) Fleet Oiler, U.S. merchant ship, that carried refined fuel. Refueled combat ships in the Pacific Theater including Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and Saipan. Carried Navy gun crews for security.
