Activity During WWII

General Commander of Allied forces in the Philippine Islands at the time of their surrender to the Empire of Japan. He became a Prisoner of War for three years and was liberated in August 1945. Witnessed the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, and returned to the Philippines to receive the surrender of the local Japanese commander. He was a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his courageous leadership during the fall of the Philippines.
