Served as Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division, the oldest division in the U.S. Army, and nicknamed 'The Big Red One' and 'The Fighting First'. From 1942 to 1945, he was Commanding General of Field Artillery Replacement Training Center, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Received the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the French Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre with Palm.
