Activity During WWII

Graduated from medical school at the University of California, San Francisco and post-doctoral work at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Harvard University. He was a radiologist who was a pioneer in nuclear medicine. Served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a Colonel. He was responsible for the health and safety of the thousands of personnel involved in the Manhattan Project. As Chief of the Medical Section of the Manhattan Engineering District, he was responsible for the safety aspects of the detonation of the world's first nuclear weapons. He led a survey team from the Manhattan Project to access the effects of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Received the Army Distinguished Service Medal and Legion of Merit.
