He was serving on USS Donnell (DE-56) during convoy duty in the North Atlantic on 3 May 1944 when she was struck by a torpedo from German submarine U-473. He was among the 29 who were Killed in Action and is memorialized at Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, England. He is the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal.
