He was lost at sea aboard the USS Pillsbury (DD-227) South Java Sea. Sunk by Japanese Destroyers on the night of 1 March 1942. There were no survivors, all were declared dead 25 November 1945. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
