Enlisted on November 4, 1942 and earned his pilot wings. Served as an instructor pilot and then training for P-38 Lightning planes. He served as a P-38 and then P-51 Mustang pilot with the 7th Fighter Squadron of the 49th Fighter Group on Okinawa and then in Japan.
