Stationed at the Royal Air Force base in Greenham Common, England. This was one of the staging areas for D-Day. On June 5, 1944, he left this base as a Pathfinder with the 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper with orders to parachute into enemy territory in France to set up drop zones for subsequent paratroopers. They were to establish radio beacons, and liberate the town of Sainte-Mere-Eglise from German occupation. He also participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
