He served as an engineer and test pilot of many of the WWII planes, such as the B-17B, B-17C, B-17D, B-17E, B-17F. He was the test pilot of the Boeing XB-29 Superfortress that eventually was used to dropped the atomic bombs over Nagasaki and Hiroshima. He was killed on February 18, 1943 while testing the second prototype of the B-29 Superfortress. He was posthumously awarded the Air Medal.
