At the age of 18 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. While in France fighting against Germany in WWII as part of General Patton’s Third Army, he was shot in the leg. The bullet remained there. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, and holds the rank of Chevalier in the French Legion of Honor in recognition of wartime service.
