Activity During WWII

In 1943, while a teenager in High School, she would go to the post office at night in downtown Norfolk, Virginia and help the Army, Navy, and other military personnel. They would use a stick to move a marker to a location on a map. Sometimes it was just a private yacht or a speed boat moving around but they could not identify it until personnel researched it. She also listened to ear phones and called out coordinates so military personnel could plot the location on the map. After her help someone would give her a ride in an Army Jeep back to her home or to the street car that took her home. She also helped her Grandmother entertain Armed Forces personnel (Junior Officers) in an Officers Club on Freemason Street. She would talk and eat with the Junior Officers. In 1944, while attending the College of William and Mary, she knitted scarfs for the United Service Organizations and the Red Cross. She also went to the United Service Organizations dances.
