He began as an aerial gunner in 1942 in the U.S. Army Air Forces. He took navigator training and was commissioned in 1944. He served in the 301st Bombardment Group, 419th Bombardment Squadron flying in a B-17 bomber with the 15th Air Force. He was shot down near Vienna, Austria in February 1945 and spent the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp. He remained in the Air Force after WWII.
