He joined the U.S. Army on October 31, 1942 and served in the 71st Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division as a First Lieutenant. He Fought in the Northern France, Rhineland, and the Central Europe Campaigns. His military decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster. He received an honorable discharged from the U.S. Army November 29, 1945 at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.
