He signed up as a medic with the 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles) 502nd Regiment. He was a member of the 2nd Battalion under command of Captain George Lage. Jumping in parachute during the night, he was among the first to hit Normandy on June 6, 1944. In September of the same year he was in the Netherlands, as part of Operation Market Garden where he realized his second combat jump. When the tiny village of Best got shelled, he caught some shrapnel in his stomach. He was taken prisoner and sent to Stalag 2A in Neubrandenburg Mecklenberg. He received the following medals: The American Campaign, European- African-Middle Eastern Campaign with one Bronze Arrowhead and two Battle Stars, Silver Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct, Bronze Star, WWII Victory, Honorable Service while a Prisoner of War and Presidential Regimental Mention with one Oak Leaf. Also received credit for participation in campaigns of Normandy and Holland (Operation Market Garden).
