He flew some 45 missions for the 356th Fighter Group of the 8th Air Force over Europe. First flying P-47's, then P-51 Mustangs. He was shot down twice in a P-47 but survived both times. On April 9th, 1945 while flying his P-51 'Big Lefty-Little Ann', he was Killed in Action when his plane crashed outside of Koblenz, Germany. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.
