He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the Aircraft Carrier Saratoga during WWII. He was an Aircraft Radio Technician aboard the Saratoga in support of the Marine landings on Iwo Jima. The carrier was attacked by 7 Japanese Kamikaze planes that bombed the carrier. He was severely burned in the encounter and transported to a San Francisco hospital to recover from his wounds. Due to a loss of records in the St Louis Records Depository Fire, no record was found authorizing him award of the Purple Heart Medal.
