On May 28, 1943, while still in his fourth year of High School, he enlisted in the Army. He attended Officer Candidate School under the Navy V-12 program at Middlebury College, Vermont. He was called for active duty July 1, 1943. His radio training was taken in Chicago, after which he completed the Navy electrician's course at Great Lakes. He served at an amphibious base at Falmouth, England. Later, he was assigned to the USS Stewart Destroyer Escort 238 for North Atlantic Patrol and Convoy duty. On January 6, 1946 he was honorably discharged from Lido Beach center.
