Before entering the service he was employed as sales clerk. On April 18, 1942 he enlisted in the Army and began his basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama, with Company C, 1759th Engineering Combat Battalion. He served in Italy with the Combat Engineers in Algiers, French-Morocco Campaign, and in the Tunisian, Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno Campaigns. His awards include five Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. On May 12, 1945, he was honorably discharged from Fort Dix, New Jersey.
