He served in the 29th Infantry Division that landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy in Operation Overlord. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in ground operations in the Normandy campaign and 3 Purple Hearts for wounds received in combat in St. Lo and the Vire area, both in France, and Baesweiler, Germany. In 2019, the Consulate General of France presented him with the French Legion of Honor for service to France.
