Served in the 4th Parachute Battalion in Bougainville. When paratroopers were recalled from the Pacific in 1943, he trained in Hawaii for the invasion of Iwo Jima. On February 19, 1945, he landed on Iwo Jima and on March 3, 1945 while fighting near the Japanese front line, he was hit close by a Japanese grenade. After being patched up, he was listed as GSW or Gun Shot Wound, and he was sent back to the U.S. On March 3, 1946, he received the Purple Heart.
