On April 20, 1942, he enlisted in the Army and was attached to the 69th Station Hospital of the Medical Corps. In early 1943 he was sent overseas and saw action in North Africa and Sicily. in mid-1945 he had saved an officer's life administrating first aid while under enemy fire. This occurred with the Fifth Army in the Italian Campaign. He was attached to the 85th Infantry and the 310th Medical Battalion at the time and was honored with the Bronze Star for heroic achievement. He was ready for discharge in late 1945. He was in service for three years, two of which were spent overseas.
