Served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany from 1942 to 1946. She helped to ease the suffering of inmates at both the Allach and the Dachau concentration camps. She battled not only the Germans, but also hunger, exhaustion, inclement weather and sickness. She often worked 18-hour shifts, 7 days a week, caring for the sick, the wounded and the dying. Awarded eight battle stars.
