She was attending the University of New Hampshire when she and 18 other female students were recruited to train as engineers at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in Hartford, Connecticut. Pratt and Whitney paid for the women to complete their degrees and in 1944, she graduated with a degree in Applied Science and worked at Pratt and Whitney designing and testing jet engines.
