He served as a Technician Fifth Grade in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division, 398th Infantry Regiment, Second Battalion, Company G, in the European Theater of Operations. He was awarded a Silver Star at Jagstfeld, Germany, and also received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was captured by the Germans and was a Prisoner of War. He was taken on a 32 day forced march across Germany to Austria.
