Enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps December 14, 1942. After receiving his training, he was awarded his pilot's wings on June 27, 1944, and shortly afterwards was sent overseas to Italy. He flew his own bomber across the North and Mid-Atlantic. He was attached to the 739 Bombardment Squadron, 454th Heavy Bomber Group, 104th Air Wing of the 15th Air Force. He was awarded the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, a Presidential Citation and wears the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon. After eight months in Southern Italy he returned to the United States and was honorably discharged on October 3, 1945 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
