He was inducted into the Army on April 6, 1942 at Fort Jay, New York and became an Military Policeman in the Air Corps, 933rd Guard Squadron, at Moody Field, Georgia, where he served for two years, eight months. Transferred to the infantry December 28, 1944, he was sent to the European Theatre of Operations as a replacement and continued duty with the 86th Division. He returned to the United States in June 1945 and re-deployed to the Pacific, spending five months in the Philippine Islands. Returning to the United States, he was discharged on February 8, 1946 from Fort Dix, New Jersey.
