He enlisted on April 15, 1942. From October to May, 1944, he was the Senior Coast Guard Intelligence Officer in charge of all of Long Island, New York. Transferred to Officers Intelligence School in Washington D.C. where he completed a course in Military Law and was then appointed Officer in Charge of Undercover Activities in the Port of New York. While serving in this capacity, he received a written commendation for prosecuting a murder case. On January 1, 1945, he was commissioned Senior Patrol Officer in the City of New York.
