He served as a Private First Class in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division, 398th Infantry Regiment, First Battalion, Company C, in the European Theater of Operations. Killed in Action on November 19, 1944, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He is buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-Avoid, France.
