He served as a Radarman onboard the USS John A. Bole (DD-775) in the Pacific Theater of Operations. The USS Bole was part of a carrier group in the Hawaiian waters and took part in the air strike on Wake Island and then escorted a carrier to Enewetok Atoll. While onboard the USS Bole, he served in the waters off Okinawa on picket duty and the waters off Japan and Korea.
